As fall gradually gives way to winter, it is important to winterize your lawn equipment to extend its life and efficiency. Taking the time and effort to properly winterize your lawn care equipment is worth the time and effort and it takes and will guarantee fewer issues in the spring.
Small engines such as found in your lawn mowers and gas powered trimmers and blowers are susceptible to a variety of problems caused by today’s blended fuels. It is recommended that you treat your gasoline with a fuel stabilizer and allow it to circulate through your gas powered motors, and if possible run the gasoline out of the tank. This is also a good time to change the oil and complete any other maintenance tasks such as sharpening the blades on your mower. Make sure to check with and comply with the manufacturers recommendations for winterizing your lawn equipment.
This is also a good time to take care of your lawn and garden tools. Make sure that you clean off your shovels, trowels, garden hoses and such before storing them. You can use a wire brush for hard to remove soil and rust and then wipe the tool down with some motor oil to keep them from rusting again. If your wooden handles are rough, you can use sandpaper to smooth them out and then apply some linseed oil to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting. Garden hoses should be disconnected, drained and stored indoors to prolong their life.
While you are winterizing your lawn care equipment it is also a good idea to inspect your snowblower and make sure it is ready before the snow starts to fall. Besides the engine, inspect the blades/auger, clutch, belt and any other common wear parts. Make sure the nuts and bolts are in place and properly torqued. Make sure to check the manufacturers recommendations. This is also a good time to make sure you have a good snow shovel on hand.
